Project's details

Project title Augmented Reality Art Tour
Background The UC Davis library has a art collection of over 1000 paintings, photographs and sculptures. Hidden throughout the labyrinth of book stacks and tucked away in study rooms, much of the art goes unseen. We are updating our art catalog with a public API to access high resolution imagery and associated metadata. In addition, the library has a suite of installed bluetooth beacons that might be used for locating users within the building.
Description The UC Davis Library is building a mobile application showcasing the Shield’s Library’s vast art collection. The application will replace the existing static tour guide, and will provide dynamic overlays to information about each art piece. In addition, we plan to include 3-d maps of the library’s rooms, so that users can take the tour virtually. We would like to leverage this data to offer users with mobile devices an augmented reality tour potentially with guided indoor navigation. Users would point their device at the art pieces be presented with additional information of the artwork from our digital collection. They may be directed to additional works of art through the same system, with knowledge of the users location.
Deliverable Indoor navigation via bluetooth beacons or machine learning from phone camera images compared with image catalogs. Machine learning to recognize library art. Develop Android and iOS applications to publish via Play Store and App Store respectively. Additionally investigate the use of WebBluetooth for a web compatible version ( Chrome only ).
