Project title A Web Interface for Ophthalmic Image Data Transfer and Inventory for the UC Davis Reading Center
Background In healthcare, data for clinical trials are often collected by a centralized coordinating center using specialized database software that is secure and compliant with the Health Insurance Portability and Accountability Act of 1996 (HIPAA). Many studies also require collection of radiologic data (e.g. CT or MRI scans). In particular, ophthalmic studies often employ a variety of imaging modalities such as retinal photographs, optical coherence tomography (OCT), fluorescein angiography (FA), and fundus autofluorescence (FAF). Large multicenter clinical trials often employ a centralized reading center such as the UC Davis Reading Center (details at https://health.ucdavis.edu/eyecenter/yiulab/ReadingCenter.html) which coordinates the collection of patient image data for analysis by masked expert graders. However the collection of these images from different national or international study sites by the Reading Center is done manually via secure file-transfer protocol (sFTP) client, and is prone to user error if files are misnamed, incorrectly dated, or wrong format uploaded.
Description The goal of this project is to develop a web interface for the transfer, storage, and organization of multimodal ophthalmic image data for the UC Davis Reading Center. This interface would allow users on the front-end to appropriately rename and upload images onto an sFTP server at UC Davis, and also, to allow Reading Center staff on the back-end to verify and inventory the image data. Additionally, a system should be created to generate accounts for only certified users to login to this system. Participants will work with a team of ophthalmologists, clinical research coordinators, and image graders from the UC Davis Eye Center. The project team will help client brainstorm and design this interface to optimize user experience and ensure accuracy of image upload data.

The following features are desired:
• An intuitive user interface for entering patient identifiers, date, image type, file format
• Safeguards to ensure proper filename and format for file uploads
• Logging of file transfers
• Database to manage inventory of patient image data from multiple clinical sites
• Database to manage front-end and back-end users (study sites and image graders)
Deliverable • A fully-functional software interface to enable patient image data transfer
• Database for logging user accounts and storing/organizing image data and metadata
Skill set desirable • The ideal team will have experience with web development and database management
• Knowledge of image data and analysis is preferred
