Project's details

Project title VR learning module for industrial food processing
Background Industrial food processing facilities are loud, difficult to navigate, and sometimes dangerous. For this reason, it is difficult to give students are tactile understanding of how food processing equipment operates and how operators monitor and interact these machines. Virtual reality (VR) offers a tool to allow students to explore food processing equipment at true scale and to safely interact with these equipment. As a result, VR can be a unique and powerful tool to enable student learning in our food processing curriculum.
Description In this project, the students will work with the PI (Prof. Simmons) to develop 3D models and implement them into interactive VR environements. Specifically, the project team:
1. Model an industrial produce washing system as a 3D environment
2. Overlay animations of fluid dynamics simulations into the 3D model
3. Deploy the environment as a navigable VR environment where the user can move in the XY plane and toggle fluid dynamics simulations on and off.
Deliverable 1. Blender files (.blend) and filmbox files (.fbx) containing the 3D models of the equipment and environment
2. Unity executable file containing the intractive VR environment
3. Android app, deployable on portable Oculus headsets, containing the interactive VR environment
Skill set desirable Prior experience with Unity software development kit is strongly preferred. Prior experience with Android software development kit is also preferred. Experience with Blender software is preferred but not required.
